Why should Korean traditions Craft be preserved?

혹시 생각해 본적 있는가,

한국 전통 문화를 지켜야할 이유를

여러가지 해석이 있겠지만

필자는 한국 미술학자 고유섭 선생님의 '구수한 큰맛'이라는 책에서 해답을 얻었다.

'특색이라는 것은 결국 전통이란 것의 극한개념이다. 그러므로 자의식의 자각, 자의식의 확충을 위하여는 끊임 없이 이 전통을 찾아야 하며, 끊임없이 이 전통을 찾자면 끊임 없이 그 특색을 찾아야 할 것이다.

우리는 너무나 오래 이 전통을 돌보지 아니하였고, 너무나 오래 이 특색을 찾지 않고 있었다. 이는 결국에 있어 자아 의식의 몰각이며 자주의식의 몰각이다. 자아 의식이 몰각된 생활, 자주의식이 목각된 생활은 결국에 있어 수면의 생활이며 본능적 생활이다.

다만 이때 주의하여야 할 것은, 그것이 특색이요 전통이라 해도 반드시 전부가 가치 있고 또 고집해야 할것은 아니다. 그곳에는 뛰어난 일면이 있는 동시에 열악한 일면도 있는 것이다. '

우리의 문화는 어느 것하고도 비교할 수 없는 특색이자 자의식이다.

우리는 너무나 오랫동안 외부에서 이것을 찾고자 하였다.

가까이 있는 것을 소홀히 생각하며, 우리의 것을 비하했다.

지금에와서 찾아야하는 이유는?

세계는 지금 빠르게 하나가 되고 있다. 여기에서 자의식이 없으면 휩쓸리고 선동되기 쉽다.

마치 어린 시절 학대받은 아이가 자존감이 떨어져서 자라온 것처럼..

우리는 가까이 있는 것부터 사랑해야 한다.

아끼고 보살피고, 그래야 내면이 쌓이면서 다른 나라와 견줄 때 당당할 수 있다.

문화 예술은 비교우위가 있을 수 없다.

내가 당당하고 아름답다 여기면 그게 특색이 되는 것이고 그것이 또한 높은 자존감으로 이어질 수 있다.

한국에는 이런 자의식을 갖고 훌륭한 장인 기술자 작가들이 많다.

다만, 세계화의 파도에 휩쓸려 코어가 무너진채 익사 당하지 말자.

문화 유산이라는 당당하고 곤조있는 문화가 있음을 자랑스럽게 사랑스럽게 여기고

이를 가꿔가면 내가 누구인지, 어디서 왔는지, 뿌리가 무엇이며, 내 언어와 문화를 아깔 수 있다.

그러면 외국에 나갈 때도 큰 사람이 되고 다른 이들을 품어 줄 수가 있다.

한국의 갖고 있는 가치와 깊은 역사와 특색을 살피고 우수성을 살펴야 한다.

그래야 내가 갖고 있는 독창성과 맞물릴 수 있다.

이것이 전통을 고집하고 지켜온 이유이다.

Have you ever wondered why Korean traditional culture should be preserved?

There may be many interpretations, but I found my answer in “The Simple, Generous Taste” by the Korean art historian Ko Yu-seop.

“What we call ‘distinctiveness’ is, in the end, the ultimate concept of tradition.Therefore, in order to awaken and expand our self-consciousness, we must continually seek out this tradition. And to keep searching for tradition is, in turn, to keep searching for that distinctiveness. For far too long we have neglected this tradition, and for far too long we have failed to look for this distinctiveness. Ultimately, this is nothing less than a loss of self-awareness and a loss of independent consciousness. A life without self-awareness, a life without independence, is ultimately a life lived in sleep—an instinctive life. However, one must also remember that even if something is called a ‘tradition’ or a ‘distinctiveness,’ not everything within it is necessarily valuable or worth preserving. Within it there are both admirable aspects and weaker ones.”

Our culture is a distinctiveness that cannot truly be compared with any other; it is a form of collective self-awareness.

Yet for a long time, we tried to find that identity outside of ourselves.We overlooked what was close to us and undervalued what was our own.

So why must we search for it again now?

The world is rapidly becoming more interconnected. In such a world, without a clear sense of self, it is easy to be swept away and influenced by external forces—much like a child who grows up under abuse and loses their sense of self-worth.

We must first learn to love what is close to us.To cherish it, care for it, and nurture it. Only then can an inner depth accumulate, allowing us to stand confidently when we encounter other cultures.

In the realm of culture and art, there can be no true hierarchy of superiority.

If we believe ourselves to be dignified and beautiful, that conviction itself becomes our distinctiveness, and from it grows a strong cultural self-esteem.

Korea is home to many remarkable craftsmen, artisans, and artists who possess such self-awareness.

However, amid the powerful waves of globalization, we must be careful not to drown with our cultural core already eroded.

We should take pride in the cultural heritage we have inherited—a culture that carries dignity, resilience, and character.By loving and cultivating it, we come to understand who we are, where we come from, what our roots are, and we learn to value our own language and culture.

Then, when we step into the world beyond our borders, we can stand as fuller human beings—capable of embracing others as well.

We must continue to examine the values, deep history, and distinctiveness that Korea possesses.Only then can they intertwine with the originality each of us carries within.

This is why we persist in preserving and upholding tradition.
